DATIVE CASE IN RUSSIAN

Наташе 24 года. Natasha is 24 years old.

In Russian if we speak about someone’s age we use the Dative case form for the person mentioned. The same rule works for the places and things: Этому городу 800 лет (This city is 800 y.o.) Этой шубе уже 15 лет (This fur coat is already 15 y.o.) These are just several examples when to use the Dative case in Russian.

When to use the Dative case in Russian. The use of the Dative (with examples):

WITHOUT PREPOSITIONS

  1. Recipient of an action
  1. Я часто звоню своей сестре. I often call to my sister.
  1. Expressing emotional or physical states
  1. Ей холодно. She is cold.
    Марине скучно. Marina is bored.
  1. Expressing necessity
    нужно, надо (need, should, have to)
  1. Мне нужно купить словарь. I need to buy a dictionary.
    Ире надо больше отдыхать. Ira should rest more.
  1. Expressing permission and prohibition
    можно, нельзя (can, can not)
  1. Вам можно уйти раньше. You may leave earlier.
    Андрею нельзя курить. Andrey can not smoke.

  1. Means of communication:
    по (by, on)
  1. Она не любит говорить по телефону. She doesn’t like talking on the phone.
    Мы любим общаться по интернету. We like associating on the internet.
  1. Attribute, specialization:
    по (on, of, for, in)
  1. Учебник по русскому языку. Textbook of Russian language.
    Специалист по продажам. Sales specialist.
  1. Time of regular action:
    по (on, in, every, each)
  1. Мы играем в футбол по вторникам. We play football on Tuesdays.
    По субботам у нас разговорный клуб. Each Saturday we have speaking club.
  1. Reason or cause
